If Sailor Moon Crystal gets more episodes and makes it to that arch, I would think the starlights would be more like they were in the manga. Only pretending to be a boy band instead of physically changing. Thats how Naoko has seemed to always want it.

I personally dont see the anime version as a big deal. Since they were really woman that just magically disquised themselves to be men to hide from the enemy. The same reason they posed as men in the manga, they just took it a step further here.
