It depends on the season. For me the issue is not so much "light" or "dark" as trying too hard? E.g. I can see why some people feel that certain shows try too hard to "force" comedy and wacky moments (although it rarely bothers me) but conversely there are shows like RPM, which thought that if it made fun of the conventions of the franchise and made it clear that the writers knew how a Power Rangers show is perceived, it somehow made RPM better than "just" a Power Rangers show. It didn't.
