I think they mean going to different time periods in history. Not the history of the show. But your right, both ideas would have been expensive.

I would have liked to see some episodes in 2001 and some episodes in different time periods. Well more then we got. Space did the same thing. Since they spent time in Space and had episodes set in Angel Grove.
